Intensive Blood Pressure Control Reduces Left Ventricular Enlargement in Aortic Valve Disease
A recent study examined whether intensive blood pressure control could reduce left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with aortic valve disease and high blood pressure. The researchers found that targeting a systolic blood pressure below 130 mmHg versus below 140 mmHg resulted in less of an increase in left ventricular mass over two years. For patients with aortic valve disease and high blood pressure, keeping blood pressure well-controlled through lifestyle changes and medication can help prevent the heart from becoming overly enlarged. Tips include maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and taking blood pressure medications as prescribed. Controlling blood pressure helps reduce stress on the heart.
